Order is Everything

Not the Jedi Order... but the order in which you apply your beauty products.  It's a trial and error thing to learn if you've never thought too hard about this, and hopefully I can help someone else learn from my mistakes.

When doing makeup, you really do need to start with a clean face.  Wash with a mild cleanser, I use Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser with warm, not hot, water every morning.  It's incredibly gentle but is able to remove leftover makeup and morning eye crud.  In the shower I use the Target version of Clean and Clear Morning Burst.  It's nice and bright smelling and has a mild exfoliant.

I have normal to combo skin, and it changes in spots throughout the year.  If I've showered, I immediately moisturize with either organic virgin coconut oil or a lighter day cream with an SPF.  Right now I'm using a basic Neutragena, I don't even know which one but it has SPF 20 so that's all I really need.  If I'm wearing a foundation with SPF, I'll skip this step.  I also use Mary Kay Pore Minimizer after my moisturizer has soaked in.

That's exactly what you're looking for, too.  Soaking in.  Especially when you're getting out of the shower, your skin is ready to receive moisture in a way that it can't if you've just rolled out of bed.  Let your moisturizer and any serums/treatments really soak in before applying makeup.  I usually let my hair dry a bit in this time, too.  If you've never heard of/tried the Turbie Twist... it will change your life.

As far as makeup products go, I've changed my routine up a bit over time.  I used to always start with foundation.  Over time, I tried using foundation primer, and that took time to master (if I've come close to mastering it at all).  As with any face product, you have to rub it in, not just paint it on.  That's something I've come to learn as well.  I had been gently applying primer, and it was just sitting on top of my skin.  If you rub it in and really make sure it's making good contact, it works so much better.

I'm really loving the CoverGirl 3 in 1 Foundation, and that contains a primer/foundation/concealer in one.  I've been able to stop wearing a primer completely, as this foundation really does have great staying power.  I'll have a full tutorial on this product soon. Again, you have to apply, then rub it in.  It's amazing how much better the wear on products is when it's been rubbed in or applied properly.

After foundation, I use concealer.  I've seen concealer underneath foundation, and I've done it that way, but I feel like the coverage is so much better when it's layered over top.  Then you can blend them together as one and really highlight if you need to.  I conceal around my eyes, down the bridge and sides of my nose, and above my eyebrows as I have redness there sometimes. I really blend it in with either a brush or a sponge until it has melted into my skin.

Following concealer, I add pressed powder, bronzer, blush, and setting spray.  After that, it's eyes and lips.

Anyone have a suggestion or another way of applying products?
